Like lots of other activity-based sports scuba is reliant on specialized equipment to safely participate in. Most people who do scuba own their personal gear including their mask, snorkel and fins but for the training portion of a course most dive shops rent or sell the required scuba gear.
Scuba diving is not for everyone, so before you sign up to get your certification it’s important to speak with a doctor about whether you should do it or not. Many medical conditions may prevent you from diving and the medical questionnaire you complete at the beginning of your scuba training is important to fill out correctly.
Once you have completed your Open Water course you will be a certified PADI Open Water Diver! This certificate is valid for life and can be renewed by taking a PADI refresher program.
Many scuba professionals choose to continue their education and become a PADI Instructor, Divemaster or Assistant Instructor. In addition to completing the necessary classroom and practical skills, these courses focus on developing the underlying theory needed to teach divers of all levels.
Most scuba professionals have a strong desire to protect the marine environment and promote a healthy ocean planet. They are committed to the AWARE (awareness, water, environment, responsibility) philosophy of the PADI organization which encourages all divers to take action with their local communities and beyond.
