There is an amazing array of life to be found under the sea. Whether it be in a shipwreck or on a colorful coral reef, the diversity of wildlife is astounding.
Diving is a sport which allows anyone to explore the underwater world in safety and comfort by using scuba equipment. The acronym SCUBA stands for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus. Diving can be done recreationally or professionally. For the beginner, it is recommended that they get certified by one of the three major certifying agencies (PADI, NAUI or SSI). The certification process includes classroom instruction, training exercises in a pool and then diving on two open water dives with their instructor.
During a dive, the diver will encounter many species of fish, invertebrates, mammals, crustaceans and plants. Some of the most interesting creatures include octopuses with their chameleon-like ability to blend into their surroundings; jellyfish containing venomous stinging cells within a transparent bell body; bristle worms covered in hundreds of tiny tube feet which allow them to scuttle across rock on land or through water alike; and the krill that are food sources for so many aquatic organisms.
A scuba diver will also learn to use various hand signals to communicate with their dive buddies. The most common signal is the thumb and index finger making a circle. This is the sign that means “Everything is OK”. Other hand signals are used for signaling that something needs attention or the surface is too close. Nitrogen narcosis is a depressed mental state that can occur from too much nitrogen exposure and may lead to the more serious decompression sickness.
